Question

The Walt Disney Corporation Mission / Vision Statement:
One of the reasons why Disney has a reputation of delivering a seamless "magical" experience to its guests in all of its operations - theme parks, hotels, restaurants, retail stores, etc. - is because it has one overriding vision and mission for all of its business operations.

"The mission of The Walt Disney Company is to be one of the world's leading producers and providers of entertainment and information. Using our portfolio of brands to differentiate our content, services and consumer products, we seek to develop the most creative, innovative and profitable entertainment experiences and related products in the world."

Do you believe this statement encompasses what Walt Disney is trying to achieve?

What role does HR play in reinforcing this mission/vision statement?

Describe the steps companies like Walt Disney go through to develop a human resource strategy?

Discuss current changes in the business environment that affect the mission/vision of a company?

Explanation / Answer

Yes, I believe that the mission statement fully encompasses what Walt Disney is trying to achieve. The company is trying to achieve prominence and success and become synonymous with entertainment and information through its offerings of theme parks, hotels, restaurants and networks. Thus the mission statement is all encompassing and clearly states the purpose, aim and values of Walt Disney.

HR plays an active and key role in reinforcing Disney's mission and vision statements. HR, as a division, have a deep impact on any organization's corporate culture. The HR department helps in creating, sustaining and changing (if required) an organization's corporate culture. The mission and vision statement is reinforced through providing proper and relevant training and development to the employees. This training and development will help the employees to think and act in a proper way, in a way that will sync the employee's thoughts and actions with that of Walt Disney's mission and vision.

The HR calls the employees of Walt Disney "cast members", thus putting an emphasis on the company's objective of being providers of entertainment and information. They recruit candidates having the right values and an ability to embody the company's values.

Walt Disney develops a human resource strategy that is a global strategy. It does so by de-emphasizing the national glass ceilings. Secondly, the company identifies those activities that will help it in achieving its goals and objectives and will further the company's business strategy. In this way, Walt Disney makes an attempt to integrate its business strategy with its HR strategy.

The business environment can undergo paradigm changes and these paradigm changes can affect the mission/vision of a company. The affect can be both positive as well as negative. The business environment consists of internal environment and external environment. Now, the external business environment is complex and diverse and changes in the external business environment can lead to significant alterations in a company's opportunities and threats. This will have to be incorporated in a company's mission and vision. Changes in business environment will affect what a company wants to do now (mission) and where it wants to be in future (vision). The goals and objectives will have to be modified, keeping in mind the current context of the business environment.
