Explanation / Answer

Theory of motivation was developed through the research done by Henry Murray during 1930s to 60s. There was stress given to the behaviour of the internal state of disequilibrium. This was divided into Primary needs, secondary needs.
Primary needs consist of food, water, air, avoidance of pain and sex
Secondary needs constitute of traits driven by biological needs and are inherent to psychological nature- This includes achievement, recognition, acquisition ; dominance, aggression, autonomy; affiliation, rejection; nurturance, play, cognizance.
The need for achievement or achievement motivation was analysed and studied by David McLelland during the 70s. It meant the desire to do things in a better way by overcoming the obstacles. An individual who is high in achievement motivation will choose more difficult tasks compared to a person who is low in achievement motivation. This is derived from their need to achieve more.
For example in the book Gryffindor House and the students who belong to the house example- Harry Potter, Hermione are shown to possess the traits of desire for glory. They have the desire to leap before they look and take in charge of the situation. Even if it means fighting for the right. Even though they seek external validation from others; they are burning with the desire to prove themselves and pursue their adventures. They tend to follow the unusual paths and there is a desire for intellectual discovery.
Slytherin group has been considered as the group who cares about their reputation more than their achievements. They are more of interventionists and more risk-oriented.
The example of the character of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde is apt for high motivation value. She is an extroverted person who has a high sense and desire for achievement. She takes the initiative to be persistent and independent and does not conform to the expectations of others around her. She maintains her individuality in a strong institution like Harvard with strong efforts. She balances her need for high achievement and the expectations that the society places on her allowing people to see the skills that she possesses.
