Question
ENERGY SUSTAINABILITY.
Hi I need help. The professor said I need to do presentation after I finish readings. He said I must do water readings.
And here below is what I'm suppose to do.
Water readings
Article
1) Global Hydrological Cycles and World Water Resources
2) Virtual Water Trade and World Water
3) Water Unsustaintability
About the readings, summarizing and analyzing each assigned article and at least one additional article on the topic. Describe as much you can.Thank you!
All above following article (pdf) are available on website.
Explanation / Answer
1. Global Hydrological Cycles and World Water Resources - This article talks about the cycle of water as a natural resource on the earth's surface. Water gets recharged on a regular basis through sources like rainfall, melting of glaciers etc. Water is a valuable resource for human beings and the availability of water should mainly be determined by its flow i.e. the circulation rate of available renewable freshwater resources (RFWR). Climate changes have a deep impact on hydrological cycles. Global warming is causing regional variations in rainfall, increased melting of glaciers, and increased precipitation. Even though these changes will result in an increase in RFWR, changes in seasonal patterns like prolonged summers, rising temperatures etc. are causing the ground water to deplete in many areas of the world. Human beings will have to prepare for these changes in climate and changes in seasonal patterns.
2. Virtual Water Trade and World Water - Virtual water trade is based on the concept and principle of international trade. There are several water intensive goods (goods that require large quantities of water for their production) that are being traded on an international scale. Primary example of these goods is food and clothing. The international trade creates water footprints (just like carbon footprints). Water footprint is the amount of fresh water consumed in the production of goods and services. Water footprints helps in the creation of virtual water and the amount of water used in production can be linked to the amount of water being used in consumption.
The concept of virtual water enables water scarce countries to buy water intensive products from other economies and countries. In other words, water scarce countries import virtual water. Countries having abundant water resources are net exporters of virtual water. Thus virtual water trade creates a win-win situation for everyone.
3. Water Unsustainability - As already discussed, water is a renewable resource. This renewable resource is used for agricultural purpose, is used by industries for manufacturing, and is used by human beings for their every day requirements. Water is an important natural resource as it sustains life in all forms be it human beings or animals or plants. When there is scarcity of water or when availability of water declines then sustainability of life becomes questionable. Increase in population increases the demand for water. Global warming and change in seasonal patterns are causing a decline in availability of water.
To avoid the situation where water threatens the sustainability of life, human beings will have to start realizing the need to use water prudently and take steps to ensure that water is available for several generations in the future.
