Question

In The New Competition for Global Resources, a special report from Boston Consulting Group and Knowledge@Wharton, the threat driving new understandings about the global future, leadership, and competition was defined as "the need to compete with everyone, from everywhere, for everything" (2008, p.18). Using the case study PepsiCo India: On Road to Sustainable Development?, define how the shaping and driving forces that PepsiCo experienced in India impacted its leadership agenda. In particular, address whether the impact of the forces merely created leadership recognition that situations needed to be fixed or contained in order for the firm to penetrate further into the Indian consumer market, or whether the impact of the forces created a reorientation of the leadership agenda as the PepsiCo mindset changed because of learning about and exploring a complex set of concerns for the future.

Explanation / Answer

Pepsio , the company faced so much of challenges in India majorly because of their operational practices and strategy. Issues like presence of pesticides, labor issues in terms of salary, using underground water for production and improper waste management etc has created huge problems across society and environmental aspect. There was a claim like water for agriculture is getting exploited by tapping for production of Pepsi products.

In order to attain the sustainability practices Pepsico has changed their strategies gradually and has become more socially conscious and started driving their business with environmental perceptiveness. Plenty of CSR activities they have initiated in last decades. Planting trees and saving rain water in order to compensate the water they use for production ( aquafina advt) all has become positive movement from Pepsico side. Seeding of paddy, water harvesti ng structures in various parts of country, financial aid for constructing check dams and revitalizing ponds etc. In addition to these they have step forward towards medical camps for blood donation and awareness of AIDS etc.

Sustainability is all about business movements that support society along with their profit maximisation. Thus Pepsico is doing their CSR activities, that eventually help them for long run in countries like India with support from the society. The staretgy focused on replenishment and saving or natural resources will definetely support their business to a great extent.
