Question
This is probably a good time to discuss how other project artifacts can be used to manage a project. What other project artifacts can you name and please explain how one may use them to help control, and manage a project. You may want to have a look at the PMBOK to see how project artifacts like the communication plan, risk register, issues log, and other items can be used within the over project management plan. What are some of the project artifacts which are associated with the HR process? In addition what are some of the artifacts which are associated with the Stakeholder Management process? The key to understanding these project artifacts allows the project management professional the ability to understand which project artifacts can be used to support the PMO of any organization. In addition what project artifacts are associated with the AGILE project methodology?

Explanation / Answer
a. Project artifacts are the by-products of project development process, for instance documents like design schemes, diagrams, agendas, presentations, etc. Project artifacts are generally the documents used to note the project outcomes against the project plan and specifications needed at the given project phase. These documents are generated throughout the project lifecycle by the project team. For example: Project charter, Scope statement, organizational diagrams, etc.
Some of the project artifacts are project charter, communication plan, work breakdown structure, project schedule, decision logs, and risk logs.
Project charter defines key elements of the project like the project description, scope, distribution of roles, etc. This artifact is developed in the project initiation phase, to establish a basis on which the project will proceed.
Communication plan is a project artifact developed in the project planning phase, defining the basic guidelines on how the project team will communicate the important project information during the course of the project, for instance, when and how the meeting will be held, what kind of issues will be resolved by whom and how, document reviews, etc.
Work breakdown structure is an artifact that defines the basic activities which needs to be completed in order to complete the project. Project schedule documents the activities form the WBS, associating them with the expected deliverables, schedules and budgetary limitations. It gives the milestones of the project.
Decision logs are created in the project execution and monitoring phase that documents the various decisions that were taken during the course of the project.
A risk log helps the project team to document and monitor the project risks at various stages of the project.
b.Some project artifacts related to the HR process are the Roles and responsibilities Assigned (Responsibility Matrix), Organization charts, Project directories, Staffing management plan, etc.
c.Stakeholder management related artifacts are Stakeholder Analysis Worksheet, for analysing communication plan, etc.
d. AGILE project methodology is value driven approach for project management. The major artifacts that are associated with AGILE project methodology are vision statement (how the project is in line to the organization’s vision and goals), Project backlog, release plan (schedule), sprint backlog, roadmap, and increment.
