Question

Integration and application. Before continuing, review the cases of Southwest Airlines and Lincoln Electric at the end of the book. Then answer the following questions:

A- Which company do you think needs to be more concerned about recruiting? Why?

B- What should be the objectives of each company's recruiting efforts? Relate the recruiting objectives to each company's strategic objectives.

C- Which company is likely to have the most difficulty creating a large pool of qualified applicants? Explain your reasoning.

D- For each company, describe the HR practices that are most likely to influence employee turnover. Does low turnover contribute to the success of these companies?

Explanation / Answer

A) Lincoln needs to be concerned about recruiting. Lincoln doesn't post jobs much, which doesn't give them a good applicant flow, leaving them with less options

B) SWA just needs to maintain their already built brand name and continue their recruitment efforts. Their applicant flow will increase thanks to their brand name. Lincoln needs to start hiring more externally. This will improve its brand and give it a lot of good applicants to choose from.

C) Lincoln would have the most difficulty in creating a large pool of applicants. This is because people do not know how Lincoln is as a place to work. Also, Lincoln hasn't built a strong recruiting brand for itself. So, not many candidates will apply, resulting in a small pool of applicants.

D) For SWA, the HR practices need to be more in line with taking the employee engagement to another level to keep furthering its brand and attracting good applicants. For Lincoln, it is tough job and they have got to start hiring from outside and get their name into the job market. If this is not done, they will face a severe shortage of skilled employees in the future. The HR practices that are likely to influence the employee turnover are practices which are not employee friendly and not in line with the other companies in the corporate world. In case of friendly practices and low turnover, it definitely contributes to the success of the companies as it allows the companies to retain good talent which has learnt in the company over the years and there is less learning curves as there would be less hiring.
