Explanation / Answer
1. What is this dispute about for Kelly? For Mr. Higashi?
Mr. Higashi, was suspicious that Kelly has using sick leave as an excuse and she want to have longer weekend. Mr. Higashi also wanted Kelly to respect and involve in traditional Japanese culture, to which Kelly was not responding well and start avoiding speaking to Mr. Higashi.
2. In these types of conflicts is a compromise possible?
Yes, in these types of conflict a compromise is possible. It is all about honoring the culture difference and striking the balance local aspect of working ethics and international student’s expectations.
3. How is communication across cultures impacted in this negotiation?
In International business there are cross culture issue which plays a crucial role. Culture profoundly influences how people think, communicate, and behave. Culture at times can be hurdle to understand the other’s views and which in turns make the transaction (verbal/nonverbal) difficult. Differences in culture between business executives—for example, In this case, the work culture, tradition of Japan teachers and foreigner can create barriers in the understanding, action and implementation process. In the case study Kelly has thoughts as per her upbringing in Canadian environment where 5 days a week working is good, as importance to personal life is must. A culture where there is equality among the genders, whereas in Japan, people are so committed with their work that they work on Saturday and often stays late even after working hour. And due to gender bias women are not able to progress much, both parties are right in their approach (no one is right or wrong). If these thoughts and ethics are not talked about in cordial environment then one can really misunderstand each other and negotiation or objective of the program will not be achieved.
4. What are the tangible and intangible factors in this situation? What are the intangible factors in the negotiation? Which are more important, the tangible or intangible factors?
Tangible factors in this case are Contract by CLAIR and their terms and conditions.
The intangible factors are ‘Avoid losing face (CLAIR)’, need for respect. Appearing fair and honorable and most important maintaining relationship.
According to me intangible factors are more important as they go long way to have mutual benefits and to create happy environment for work. It also involves more creativity, unity and cordial approach. Tangible factors otherwise is terms and conditions written in black & white which by any means one needs to obey, it can sometime add pressure to both parties.
I hope your question is addressed satisfactorily.
