Question
I have a couple of quick questions:
1) Calculate the volume of 50% by mass NaOH needed to prepare 1.0 L of 0.1 M NaOH solution. (The density of 50% by mass NaOH is 1.50 g per milliliter of solution.)
- I did my work and I got 5.33mL and I just wanted to check that
2) Calculate the volume of 12.1 M HCl that should be added to 1.0 L of DI water to produce 0.1 M HCl
- I'm pretty sure this is just simple dilution which my answer came out to be 8.26mL
If anyone could confirm this or show me what they did, that would be super helpful!
Explanation / Answer
1) 50% NaOH by mass
has 50 g NaOH and 50 g water
moles of NaOH = 50/40
= 1.25 mol
Volume of solution = 100 g/1.50 g/ml
= 66.67 ml
molarity of 50% NaOH solution = 1.25/0.06667
= 18.75 M
Volume of 50% NaOH soluion required to prepare 1 L of 0.1 M NaOH solution = 0.1 M x 1000 mL/18.75 M
= 5.33 ml
2) Using,
M1V1 = M2V2
with,
M1 and M2 be mlarity of initial and final solution
V1 and V2 be volumes of initial and final solutions
So,
volume of 12.1 M HCl to be added = 0.1 M x 1000 mL/12.1 M
= 8.26 mL
