Question
can you plz explain with details, epecially the units. question 19
I have always enjoyed eating tuna fish. Unfortunately, a study of the mercury content of canned tuna in 2010 found that chunk white tuna contains 0.6 ppm Hg and chunk light tuna contains 0.14 ppm. (S. L. Gerstenberger, A. Martinson, and J. L. Kramer, Environ. Toxicol, Chem. 2010, 29, 237.) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends no more than 0.1 mug Hg/kg body weight per day. I weigh 68 kg. How ea often may I eat a can containing 6 ounces (1 lb 16 oz) of chunk white tuna so that I do not average more than 0.1 mug Hg/kg body weight per day? If I switch to chunk light tuna, how often may I eat one can?Explanation / Answer
1)Amount of Hg in chunk white tuna=0.6 ppm=0.6mg/kg
Mass of chunk white tuna in a can=6 ounces= 6*0.02835kg=0.170 kg [1ounce=28.3495 grams *10^-3 kg/g=0.02835 kg]
Amount of Hg in 1 can of white tuna=0.6 mg/kg *0.170 kg=0.10206 mg=0.10206 mg*1000 ug/mg=102.06 ug/can
Amount of Hg in that can be consumed per day by you=0.1ug Hg/kg body weight=0.1ug Hg/kg *68 kg=6.8 ug
# of cans that can be consumed=6.8ug/102.06 ug/can=0.06=0.06*100=6% of 1 can in a day
So 100 % of a can or 1 can should be taken in # of days =100/6=16.7=17 days
You can consume 1 can chunk white tuna once in 17 days
2) Amount of Hg in chunk light tuna=0.14 ppm=0.14 mg/kg
Mass of chunk light tuna in a can=6 ounces= 6*0.02835kg=0.170 kg [1ounce=28.3495 grams *10^-3 kg/g=0.02835 kg]
Amount of Hg in 1 can of light tuna=0.14 mg/kg *0.170 kg=0.0238 mg=0.0238 mg*1000 ug/mg=23.800 ug/can
Amount of Hg in that can be consumed per day by you=0.1ug Hg/kg body weight=0.1ug Hg/kg *68 kg=6.8 ug
# of cans that can be consumed=6.8ug/23.8 ug/can=0.286=0.286*100=28.6% of 1 can in a day
So 100 % of a can or 1 can should be taken in # of days =100/28.6=3.5 days ,
You can consume 1 can chunk light tuna once in 3.5 days
