THERMODYNAMICS QUESTION
Hi, my only question is about the "acceptable drawing" portion. What do you suppose the instructor means by drawing a stoichiometric equation? I have provided my answer so far, I just need an explanation of what type of picture I am supposed to include. Please point out any mistakes I've made as well, if possible!
QUESTION:
MY ANSWER:
3. ucose (C6H1206) and ammonia (NH3) are anaerobically converted (fermented) by yeast (C to 1.74 0.2 0.45 ethanol (C2H5OH), glycerol (C3HBO3), carbon dioxide (CO2), and water (H2O) according to the empirical stoichiometric equation C6H1206 a (NH3) b(CH1 0.2 0.45 2 5 1.74 3 3. e(CO2) f (H20) Experimental data indicates that 0.12 moles of glycerol are formed for each mole of ethanol produced and that 0.08 moles of water are formed for each mole of glycerol Derive a set of linear equations that can be used to determine the values of the stoichiometric coefficients (a,b,c,d,e & f) in the relation above. Point distribution (prob 3) l pt acceptable drawing (stoichiometric eqn) 1 pt acceptable nomenclature 2 pt equationsExplanation / Answer
Solving these linear equations:
Put
d=0.12c
f=0.08c
a=0.2b
b=(12-7.12c)/1.14
We get final two equations:
-1.37c+2e=1.27
3.87c-e =4.2
So solving these equations:
c=1.61
e=1.74
So
d=0.12c=0.1932
f=0.08*c=0.1288
b=(12-7.12c)/1.14=0.477
a=0.2*b=0.094
So put all values in stoichiometry equation :
C6H12O6+0.094(NH3) ---->0.477(CH1.74N0.2O0.45)+1.61(C2H5OH)+0.1932(C3H8O3)+1.74(CO2)+0.1288(H2O)
