Question

Please help me answer this question.

Assume the Pacific Ocean has a surface area of 1.9 times 10^8 km^2 and an average depth of 3500 m. You will be give four chances to answer each question. However, should you run out of attempts and miss a problem completely, the answer will be displayed so that you can use it to help with the remaining problems. If the volume of ocean water (calculated above) contains 3.5 percent sodium chloride ("salt") by mass and the density of the water is 1.46 g/ml_, calculate the total mass of sodium chloride. (1 ton = 2000 lb, 1 lb = 453.6 g) Calculate the mass of sodium chloride in kg (DO NOT enter the units: kilograms will be assumed)

Explanation / Answer

Surface area = 1.9 × 10^8 Km^2

Depth is = 3500 m = 3.5Km

Volume of pacific ocean = 3.5 Km × 1.9×10^8Km^2 = 6.7 × 10^8Km^3 = 6.7×10^20 litre

Mass % of sodium chloridre = 3.5%

Density of water = 1.46 g/ml

= 1.46Kg/Litre

Therefore for 6.7×10^20 litre of water , the mass = 6.7×10^20 × 1.46Kg= 9.782×10^20Kg

Therefore, mass of sodium chloride =( 3.5/100)×9.782×10^20 =3.42×10^19 Kg
