Question
These all relate to FAJANS DETERMINATION OF CHLORIDE (answer what you can)
A. Could you use Fajans method to determine the exact concentration of a ~0.01 M HCl solution? Give the reason for your answer.
B. Find two other methods for the titration of chloride that rely on the development of a color. Briefly point out the difference between these methods and the one you have just performed.
C. What causes the dark color that forms when AgCl is exposed to light?
D. How would you recycle silver waste?
E. If you were doing a gravimetric chloride determination by AgCl precipitation, then how could you deal with the colloidal nature of the precipitate?
Explanation / Answer
a) No. Fajans method relies on the naked eye, which is not as precise as analytical instrument.
c)The dark colour is the result of the photodeomposition of the AgCl in the precence of organic compounds. The purple colour is elemental silver.
d) Recycling
Silver bearing fixer solutions are a regulated haza
rdous waste, and must be handled, stored and
shipped as dictated by the
Hazardous Waste Rules
. A registered hazardous waste transporter must
pick up the fixer solution, and document the shipme
nt on a manifest. Ensure your silver fixer waste is
sent out “for recycle” and this noted on the manife
st in order to be exempt from the New Hampshire
hazardous waste fee.
