Question
As a doctor you have a patient that has an irregular heart beat and later discover that the semilunar valves are not properly closing. What would be a consequence on the flow of blood through the heart?
Blood would flow back into the ventricles during contraction from the atria and through the semilunar valves
Blood would flow back into the ventricles during contraction through the atrioventricular valves only

Blood would flow back into the atria during contraction from the ventricles through the semilunar valvesExplanation / Answer
Function of the semilunar valves:
As ventricles contract and intra-ventricular pressure rises, blood will be pushed up against the semilunar valves forcing them to open.
As ventricles relax and intra-ventricular pressure falls, blood flows back from the arteries, filling the cusps of semilunar valves and force them to close.
Therefore, if semilunar valves are not properly closing it would make the blood flow back into the ventricles during contraction from the atria and through the semilunar valves - Option (A).
