Question
the solubility of acetanilide in hot water Look up boiling points for the solvents listed on page 2. Complete the b.p. column of the table in your lab notebook. The solubility of acetanilide in hot water (5.5 g/100 mL at 100 degree C) is significant and its solubility in cold water (0.53 g/100 mL at 0 degree C) is not very great. What would be the maximum theoretical percent recovery (first crop only) from the crystallization of 1.9 g of acetanilide from 55 mL of water (assuming the solution is chilled to 0 degree C)? What happens if you cool the recrystallization solution in a container of ice that is tinfinity big for theExplanation / Answer
Solution :-
At the 0 C the solubility is 0.53 g per 100 ml water
So in the 55 ml water amount of the acetanilide that can be soluble is calculated as follows
55 ml * 0.53 g / 100 ml = 0.292 g acetanilide
So out of the 1.9 g acetanilide only 0.292 gram can be crystalized
So the percent theoretical recovery is calculated as follows
[0.292 g / 1.9 g ] *100 % = 15.37 %
