Hello, need a little help!
1. Latent fingerprints are made of oils and sweat which are deposited on an object when it is touched. There are several methods by which latent prints can be collected. Describe two of those techniques.
2. Please help, I would like you to find a case from any era or time frame that was solved by the use of fingerprint examination and post a summary here. Make sure you specify the role that fingerprint identification made in either solving the case and convicting an offender.
Explanation / Answer
Latent fingerprints: An impression left by the friction ridges of a human finger on an object when it is touched. This prints recovered from crime scene is an important part of forensic science. Fingerprints are naturaly deposited on the surface by secreation of sweat and oil from the eccrine glands present in the epidermal ridges. This process helped to solve many murder mystries and also helped for other purpose like electronic registration etc.. There are several methods to collect the latent print out of which two of those techniques are
1. Photographing the latent fingerprint: After the print is located a photograph is taken very keenly. Photographing serves as a key piece of identification of a Patent or plastic print for comparision and also to match the print to its source. This technique also guards against tempering of evidence.
2. Lifting the fingerprint: It means to m.ake a permanent impression of the fingerprint. It involves a rubber tape with an adhesive surface which is applied to the fingerprint, leaving the imprint on the tape. It can be done on flat or round surface. One should ensure while lifting the fingerprint that there are no bubbles or ripples in the tape because of which the imprint will be affected. then the tape is carefuly peeled off from the surface and a plastic cover is placed n the adhesive side of the tape in order to prevent disruption of the print . Description of the location and identification details are written on the back side of the tape . After the print is lifted, it is converted in to digital data to get a clear image.
2. The Latent finger print is used to solve a British murder case :
The neighbours of Thomas and Ann Farrow , shop keepers in London, discover their bodies in their home. Thomas was already dead where as Ann was breathing. She was rushed to hospital but with out regaining consciousness she died after four days. This brutal crime was solved by using the Latent fingerprint technique.
Since the cash box in which the Farrow's stored their cash receipts was empty, the motive of the murder was dected as robbery. One print on the box did not match the victims or with any other crimal print file. Fortunately, a local milkman reported seeing two young menin vicinity of Farrow house on the day of murder. Police soon identified them as brothers Alfred and Albert Stratton on this clue. both of them were caught after a week and took the finger prints of both. After investigating it was found that Alfred's right thumb was a perfect match for the print on the Farrow's cash box.
The Stratton brothers found guilty and were hanged on May 23, 1905. Thus the case was solved using fringerprint strategy.
