Separation of a mixture. compare and contrast the flammability and evaporation test between water, ethanol, wine and distillate. describe how this relates to what you concluded from your density measurements.Explanation / Answer
Ethanol is highly inflammable, it will combine with oxygen fairly well to give off carbon dioxide and water as products.
Ethanol evaporates faster than water. This is due to the presence of intermolecular H-bondind in water.
Alcohol can also form hydrogen bonds, but the carbon atoms in its molecules are unable to form such strong
connections with each other.
This lack of cohesion between carbon atoms allows alcohol molecules to move past each other relatively easily,
while water's strong internal attraction creates a resistance to evaporation.
This is why water remains liquid from 0 up to 100 degrees Celsius.
The main constituents of grapevine berry juice and wine are:
Even wine is also highly inflammable and evaporates easily.
If we do distillation process to this mixture, first ethanol evaporates and separates out from the mixture that means it has lower density than the others.
Then in wine ,the alcohols, phenolics evaporate and leaving behind some inorganic matter, nitrgenous compounds in water.
Hence the density of ethanol< wine< water
