The Average Mass of a Penny Tare the balance. Obtain three pennies. Place one penny on the balance, and record the mass to the nearest 0.001 g. Repeat for the remaining two pennies. Calculate the average mass of a penny based on your data. Weighing Out a Sample of Sugar Place a weighing boat on the balance, and tare it. Using a metal spatula, carefully measure out 0.2 g of sugar. Record the mass of the sugar to the nearest 0.001 g. Pour your sugar sample back into the beaker of sugar (not something we would do with an actual reagent!), and clean up any residual sugar left on the balance or the bench. Leave the empty weighing boat for the next group. Mass of Sugar Sample:_____ The Density of Water Obtain the mass of the 10-mL graduated cylinder from your drawer to the nearest 0.001 g. Make sure it's dry! Pour approximately 5 mL of water into the graduated cylinder, and record the volume (V) to the nearest 0.01 mL. Be sure to read the bottom of the meniscus. Obtain the mass of the graduated cylinder with the water, and calculate the mass of the water (m) in the cylinder. Use the following equation to calculate the density (d) of water, in g/mL. d = M/V

Explanation / Answer

Determination of Average Mass of a Penny

Objective : To find out average mass of a penny

Introduction :Pennies are mostly made up of 95% Copper and 5% Zinc. Changing this ratio can change their density and as a result their mass too. In this lab we will try to find out the vaerate mass of one penny. three pennies are used for this purpose

Experimental Section : The balnce was tared. One penny was placed on the balance and its mass was recorded to the nearest 0.001 g. The process is repeated for the other two pennies and the result was recorded.

Results and discussion :

Average mass = 3.099g + 3.117g + 2.507g/3 = 2.907 g

Conclusion : Average mass of a penny is 2.907 g

Mass of Penny1 Mass of penny 2 Mass of penny #3 3.099g 3.117g 2.507g
