3 SOLUTIONS AND NAME SOLUTION CONCENTRATIONS 1415 Section Pre-Lab Assignment Experiment objectives A, B, and C require you to devise procedures for preparing a saturated aqueous solution of potassium dihydrogen phosphate, experimentally determining the density of this solution, and experimentally determining the mass percent of potassium dihydrogen phosphate in this solution. Your pre-lab assignment is to develop procedures for parts A, B and C. You will then execute these procedures in lab. A. PREPARATION OF ASATURATED EOUS POTASSIUM DIHYDROGEN PHAT SOLUTION (Reminder: use a maximum of 75 mL of water.) B. DENSITY OF SATURATED AQUEOUS TASSIUM DIHYDROGEN PHAT SOLUTION C. MASS PERCENT OF POTASSIUM DIHYDROGEN PHOSPHATE IN A SATURATED SOLUTION

Explanation / Answer

A) Preparation of a saturated aqueous potassium dihydrogen phosphate solution:

Fist weight the beaker which you want to use: X gm
Then add known quantity of water to it (ex: 50 gm): total weight: ( X+50) gm
Add slowly the potassium dihydrogen phosphate (PDP) solid with continuous stirring. At some point, you can see the PDP is not soluble anymore and the solution will be saturated with PDP.

Weight the total weight of the beaker = (X + 50 + Y) gm

B) The density of Saturated aqueous PDP solution:

Take a volumetric flask (ex:10 mL) and weight it on a balance. Note the weight of the volumetric flask = I gm;

Then fill the volumetric flask with saturated PDP solution up to the mark. Then again weigh the volumetric flask = J gm
(J-I) will give us the weight of the 10ml solution.
Density = (J-I)/10 gm/mL

C) From the experiment A, we can get the amount of PDP dissolved in 50 ml water.
The mass of the solution is (50+Y) gm
So, the mass percent = Y*100/(50+y)
