Question

This was my laboratory procedure. I synthesized the peach ester which is called benzyl acetate. Thus, my question is: Identify at least one action you could take to increase your product formation

Experiment 2: Synthesis of Flavoring Esters Adapted from: Pavia, et al. "A Microscale Approach to Organic Laboratory Techniques" 5th ed. Belmont: Brooks/Cole, 2013. Background: Due to the synthetic simplicity and fragrance produced by esters, they are often utilized in the cosmetic and food industries. They are most popular for their use in fruit flavorings. The ester functionality is also useful for drug synthesis as it is easily hydrolyzed in the body You will be choosing which ester you want to synthesize (1) Wintergreen salicylic acid & methano (2) Grape anthranilic acid & methano (3) Pear acetic acid & 1-propanol (4) Banana acetic acid & isoamyl alcohol (5) Apricot butyric acid & isoamyl alcohol (6) orange acetic acid & 1-octanol (7) Pineapple butyric acid & n-butyl alcohol/EtoH (8) Strawberry butyric acid & ethanol (9) Apple butyric acid & methanol (10) Peach acetic acid & benzyl alcoho (11) Apple/Banana acetic acid & 1-pentanol/1-butano (12) Rose acetic acid & geraniola (13) Balsamic 3 benzoic acid & n-butanol (14) Fruit benzoic acid & ethanol (15) Prune benzoic acid & methanol

Explanation / Answer

In order to increase benzyl acetate

You could increase yield

- Use sepaatory funnel correctly, rinse all material specially in the glassware, should increase mass of reagent/products

- For the "washing" step, apply multiple washes

- Wait for layer separation, and repeat, use tall glassware n order to increase the differenc ebetween layers

- Dry for longer periods

All of these should increase your final output
