Question
Hello,
I need help explaining why my boiling point is lower. I performed an Alkyl Halide synthesis by reacting 2-methyl-2-butanol with HCl to obtained a final product of 2-chloro-2-methylbutane. According to my manual, the true (literature value) boiling of 2-chloro-2-methylbutane is 86.0*C. Why is my experimental boiling point 83.0*C? I'd like to say impurities but I know that only applies to melting points really... Also I did some quick reading and it states this is due to intermolecular forces. If it is, I have no idea how to go about explaining IMFs as a source of error. Please help!!
Explanation / Answer
First of all this question is from Chemistry laberetory experiment which is certainly not my field of subject. Secondly its difficult to find out the error theoritically of a laberetory experiment without conducting the test.
