Question

Conductivity

a) What would you expect to see in a data set and on a graph of conductivity if you tested increasingly concentrated solutions of sodium acetate and eventually obtained a saturated solution?

b) Sodium Sulfate is soluble in water. How would you expect it's conductance to compare to sodium acetate at the same concentration? Explain.

c) If you had a mixture of sodium chloride and sodium bromide, could you use it's conductance to determine the concentration of each solute? Explain.

c) If you had a mixture of sodium chloride and sodium bromide, could you use it's conductance to determien the concentration of each solute? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

Sodium acetate is a strong electrolyte. Its conductance will increase very slowly with increase in concentration.

--------------------------------

Conductance of Na2SO4 should be greater than conductance of CH3COONa. As,Na2SO4 will give 3 ions per molecule where as CH3COONa produces only two ions per molecule.

----------------------------------

Answer is no. You are measuring the total conductance of the mixture. Although conductance of Br- ion and Cl- ion will different due to their sizes and as a result mobility, in a mixture it is difficult to differentiate. Since both are strong electrolyte and will be completely dissociated.
