Given the following rate law: Rate aklCHCI] [Cla] What is the reaction order with respect to chloroform, CHCl? order b. What is the eaction order with respect to chlorine? order c What is the overall reaction order? rder d. If the concentration of chloroform is cut in half, what will happen to the reaction rate? Give a quantitative response. This means don't just say increase/decrease: say how much e. If the concentration of chlorine is tripled, what will happen to the reaction rate? Give a quantitative response 2. The rate of a reaction is expressed in terms of changes in concentration of reactants and products. a. Write the balanced chemical equation for the following the reaction described by the following mathematical equation: Rate b. If the rate of loss of Naos is 0.12x 102 M/s, what is the rate of oxygen production? c What is the overall reaction rate? o 42% a

Explanation / Answer

1.Given rate = k [CHCl3][Cl2]1/2

(a) The order of the reaction with respect to CHCl3 is 1 ---> first order

(b) The order of the reaction with respect to Cl2 is 1/2

(c) The overall order is = sum of the powers of the concentration terms in the rate equation

= 1 + (1/2)

= 3/2

(d) [Cl2]' = 1/2[Cl2]

Then the new rate is k [CHCl3][(1/2)Cl2]1/2

= 0.71 x k [CHCl3][Cl2]1/2

= 0.71 x r

Therefore the new rate is 0.71 tims that of the actual rate

(e)

[Cl2]' = 3[Cl2]

Then the new rate is k [CHCl3][(3)Cl2]1/2

= 1.732 x k [CHCl3][Cl2]1/2

= 1.732x r

Therefore the new rate is 1.732 tims that of the actual rate.
