Question

Do the following problems and give the answers in the proper number of significant figures and units. Jamie and Ming determined the percentage of acetic acid in vinegar by titration with NaOH to a phenolphthalein end point. The results of all their titrations are presented in the following histogram. The graph shows the percent acetic acid in vinegar samples for all the titrations performed by Jamie and Ming. The average percentage of acetic acid as determined by Jamie was 4.421% and by Ming was 5.009%. a. The actual acetic acid percentage was 5.007%. Who had the better accuracy? b. How many titrations did each student perform? c. Who had the better precision? d. Explain how a student's data can have high accuracy and low precision.

Explanation / Answer

a)

accuracy: the less "variation" the better

In this case, Jamie got much less variation in data, so Jamie had the best accuracy

b)

From the able:

Jamie = 9 (columns)

Ming = 9 (columns)

c)

Precision = nearest to the actual value, which is 5.007, so clearly, Ming got the best precision

d)

The best example is JAMIE

high accuracy = he has low variation data, all the titration he performs are near the average

low precision = the actual value he is measuring with low variation is far away from the acutal value
