Question
I need help discussing lithium metal properties in my lab report. Our lab consisted of placing a piece of lithium ribbon inside a glove box and heating for about 10 minutes. We left the lithium metal in the glove box which was filled with nitrogen for a week. We then titrated the product with HCl. I need help discussing this chemical reaction with Li+ N2 we were supposed to find LixN and determine the number for X. Please explain in details! In the discussion include the reaction properties of Lithium with N2. The reactions are listed below
for the product I got LixN where the X equaled 4.32 it is supposed to be 3 but this was done experimentally!
Li No ProductExplanation / Answer
1) 6 Li + N2 ------------------------> 2 Li3N (product)
2) Li3N + 3 H2O ------------------------> 3 LiOH + NH3
HERE : x = 3
we know that Li is first group element its valence 1 . and nitrogen valency =3
according net ionic formula balance the compound should be Li3N
Li3N ----------------------> 3 Li+ + N-3
