Name R number. TA Section Laboratory Date 1. The Experiment 2-Post-Laboratory Questions concentration of the law of mass action predicts that the rate of a reaction depends on the reactants. a. Based on the rate law for predict the reaction rate change that would have reaction (15 been observed for reaction 1.8 each case the volume KI and (NH42Szos was twice what is indicated in Table vand VI. Explain your reasoning. b. Based on the rate law for reaction (15 predict the reaction rate change that would have been observed for reaction mixtures l-8 ifin each case 19 mL of distilled water was added to Flask B before the contents off Flask A and B were combined to initiate the reaction. Explain your reasoning.

Explanation / Answer

1(a)

rate = k[S2O8^2-][I-]

If concentration of both the reactant in increased two fold, the rate of the reaction will increase 4 times.

-------------------------------------------

1(b)

If distill water is added the concentration of S2O8^2- and I- will decrease and as a result the rate will decrease.

----------------------------------------

2(c) rate of the reaction depends on the ionic stremgth of the ions. This effect is significant in case of anions with more than one negative charge. However, a constant ionic strangth is required to maintain a constant reaction rate throughout the procedure. (NH4)2SO4 is added to maintain the constant ionic strength of S2O8^2-.

-------------------------------------

2(b) To maintain the ionic strength of I- , KNO3 is added

----------------------------------

2(c)

Both (NH4)2SO4 and KNO3 are added to maintain a constant ionic strength throughout the reaction. However , (NH4)2SO4 will have a greater effect sice its charge in greater than KNO3.
