Question
A one-liter closed container is filled with a gas that consists of 50% CO_2 and 50% of some other gas. The temperature of the mixed gas is 20 degree C and the pressure is 101.3 kPa. The container remains closed while 0.75 L of pure water is added to the container. After the water is added, the temperature in the spare above the water is 20degree C. The relationship between the (partial) pressure of CO_2 in the space above the water, P_CO2 and the concentration CO_2 in the water. CCO2 is given by P_CO2 = H C_CO2 where H is equal to 2.937 times 10^6 Pa/(mol middot L). The other gas does not dissolve in water. Determine the pressure in the space above the liquid. [The universal gas constant is 8.3112.J/(mol-K).]Explanation / Answer
Total no.of moles can be calculated using ideal gas equation
PV - nRT
PV / RT- n
n - 101.3 kpa * 1 L / 8.314 L kPa K-1 mol-1*293 K - 0.042 moles
So mixture contain 0.021 moles CO2 and 0.021 moles other gas.
So initial pressure of CO2 and other gas can be calculated using ideal gas equation.
P - 0.042*8.314*293 /0.25 - 409.2 kPa
pCO2 (partial pressure of CO2)- molefraction*Totalpressure- 0.5*409.2-204.6 kPa
C of CO2- H/pCO2- 2.937x 103 kPa /204.6 kPa- 14.35 mol L-1
