Formula function is a feature in Excel that allows you to do calculations based upon a pattern you choose.

I can explain you what it actually means.
( I am assuming that you already know all the FORMULAS for the calculations you have shown above, because that's what we will be heavily depending on in making a use out of the excel FORMULA function ).
Consider an excel file in which me make a row named X and add 5 arbitrary values and similarly do for another row named Y.
Next I want to calculate Z, which contains a number for every pair of (X,Y). Let's say that the relation is given by:
z = x2 + y/2
So, for the third row, which has x=6 and y=8, we would be getting a value of z = 62 + 8/2 = 40
Rather than calculating each value in the z-row manually in this way, and then filling up the row Z manually, we make excel do it automatically.
This is where formula function comes into action.
For the first column in row Z, we type : =( (Address of first column under row X * Address of first column under row X) + ( Address of first column under row Y / 2) )
Click Enter
The value will be displayed automatically due to this.
Next we want this pattern to get implemented for every other (x,y) pair underneath the first pair.
For this we go to the first cell under row Z for which we have just done the calculation by typing in the above formula.
On the bottom right corner there is a small dark box, click on it and drag it down to 4 columns and then leave it.
This will display the result for all other columns using the same formulation.
This is how excel function reduces our work, by applying the pattern automatically by this drag feature because of the use of formula function.
