Question
For each procedural error given below, indicate the affect (higher, lower or no affect) it would have on the percentage of copper, water, and chlorine. The assumption is only the error below occurs and the rest of the experiment is performed correctly, Please explain. A.) The hydrate was not heated long enough to remove all the water. B.) A coarse porosity filter paper was used and some copper metal was lost. C.) During the drying process for the copper metal, some it combined with dioxygen to produce a some copper (II) oxide.
Explanation / Answer
(A) If all the water content is not removed from the hydrate we will get less amount of water as some water will remain with hydrate.
(B) The yield of copper will be less. Because some copper will be lost during filtration as the filter paper has coarse porocity.
(C) When some copper combine with oxygen to form oxide the total mass of the sample will increase. Hence yield will increase.
