Question
Need some help, I was thinking the value of heat would be 9.9 kJ/mol or 9.9x10^3 J/mol, but i was incorrect. Thanks for the help in advance, I rate swiftly :)
Find the values of heat for a heating curve for 1 mole of benzene beginning at 0C and ending at 100 C. Assume that the values given here are constant over the relevant temperature ranges.
Melting point 5.4 C
Boiling point 80.1 C
Hfus 9.9 kJ/mol
Hvap 30.7 kJ/mol
Cs,solid 118 J/molK
Cs,liquid 135 J/molK
Cs,gas 104 J/molK
Part B
Find the value of heat needed for melting solid benzene to liquid.
Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units
Explanation / Answer
Heat needed for melting solid benzene to liquid = Heat required to raise the solid from temperature 0 to 5.4 + Heat of fusion + Heat required to raise the temperature of liquid from 5.4C to 80.1C + Heat required to change from liquid to gas + Heat required to change the gas from 80.1C to 100C
=> 118 * (5.4-0)J + 9.9 kJ + 135 * (80.1-5.4)J + 30.7kJ + 104 * (100-80.1)
=> 637.2J + 9900J + 10084.5J + 30700J + 2069.6J
=> 53391.3J = 53.391kJ
