Question

Trey weighed a 150 ML beaker (67.34 g) and a piece of filter paper (0.34 g) He added his unknown sample to the beaker and reweighed it (97.12 g) What was the mass of Trey's sample' Trey separated the sand from the unknown sample using a Buchner funnel. He washed it and then dried the sample on the filter paper The resulting mass of the sand on the filter paper was 5.81 What was the mass of sand that Trey recovered from ha sample? Calculate the percent sand recovered using the equation below. Trey then boded the remaining solution gently until white crystals appeared in the liquid. What are these white crystals?

Explanation / Answer

Separation and recrystallization technique

To a mixture of sand and a salt, we separate sand by using buchener funnel

the resulting solution with the salt is heated to give a clear solution and allowed to stand at room temperature

Fine crystals of salt : KNO3 are formed. the crystals are filtered and dried and weighed to get exact mass of salt present in the original sample.

= mass of crystals x 100/mass of original sample.
