asure concentration and Vo n this lab, you and your group will do a demonstration in front of the class using acids and bases and an acid-base bases react with wil demonstrate acids react with and reaction. You'll show these properties of acids and bases by using colorto reaction s the limiting reactant and which is the excess reactant. figure out which Materials vinegar (50 ml per group) 1 M HCl (50 ml per group) Phenolphthalein NaOH or KOH pellets Mg(NO3) or MgCI2 solid NaCl solid Mg(OH)2 solid magnesium metal NazCO3 solid iron metal Baking soda (NaHCO3) ethanol Tums tablet (CaCO3 Procedure Your group will do this demonstration in front of your lab class You watch this science geek showing off some science magic to some kids. The scientist pours g of white solid (A) into ml of water in a ml flask The solid disappears and the water turns pink Then the chemist pours ml of a colorless liquid (B) into the flask, puts a rubber the flask, and the flask a few seconds. The stopper flies through the air The solution Then, the person adds ml of second to flask A white solid forms and the pink solution turns colorless. science guy pour into the water? Give reasons why 1 a see the Materials list. What white solid did the did the water turn pink? basic? b calculate the molar concentration of this solution Is this solution acidic or

Explanation / Answer

When a solid A ie. NaOH is added to the water solution containing vinegar and phenolphathein the solution turns pink in colour. The vinegar and phenolphthaein indicator color is colorless but when we add a base i.e. NaOH to it the chemical equilibrium shift towards the basic condition and in basic condition phenolphthalein gives a pink color.

When to this solution if we add solution B i.e. baking (NaHCO3) to it, vinegar (CH3COOH) reacts with baking soda producing to CO2 gas due to which stopper flies into the air by liberating carbon dioxide gas.

NaHCO3(s) + CH3COOH(l) CO2(g) + H2O(l) + CH3COONa(aq)

When to this solution a solution C i.e MgCl2 is added a white precipitate of Mg(OH)2 is formed

MgCl2(aq) + 2NaOH(aq) --------> 2NaCl(aq) + Mg(OH)2(s)
