Question
I need help calculating the ph after oh- was added to my buffer in my 1:10 dilution. My assigned buffer's acid concentration was 0.001436 M and base was 0.0008676 M and then I did a 1:10 dilution which probably changed that concentration.I added 1.0 M NaOH of 0.1 mL to that diluted buffer. Can someone help me find how to find the pH. My Ka is 6.34*10^-8 M.
I calculated the assigned buffers pH after the addition, I just need help finding the diluted buffers pH I need help calculating the ph after oh- was added to my buffer in my 1:10 dilution. Explanation / Answer
[acid] after 1:10 dilution = 0.0001436 M
[conjugate base] after 1:10 dilution = 0.00008676 M
pKa = -logKa = -log(6.34*10^-8) = 7.19
pH = pKa + Log[acid/conjugate base]
= 7.19 + log[0.0001436 M/0.00008676 M] = 7.41
This value is same as the original concentrated buffer. Dilution has no effect on buffer pH as both the concentration of acid as well as the conjugated base is diluted equal amount.
