Question

I want to ask if someone can help me to understand this question. The answer is already there but I want to understand it, and how we get this answer? I already know that the higher priority is by the based on the highest atomic number, but for this question I get confused when it's more than one atom, if It was H-CH3-NH2-OH then that I understand and easy, but when its CH2-H (CH2-H3) ( CH2-NH2) I don't know how?

CH3 CH3 H C-CH3 c-CH3 c-CH2 CH3 IV a) II, III, I, IV b) III, II, IV, I c) III, I, IV, II d) IV, II, I, III Answer: c

Explanation / Answer

Triple bond = accounts for 3 times the bonded specie

Double bond = accounts for 2 times the bonded specie

single bond = accounts for 1 time the bonded specie

so..

I) HC=CH2 --> this has 2 carbons, secondary carbon

II) C(triple)C --> 3 carbons; primary carbon

III) 2 carbons + 1 hydrogen --> secondary carbon

IV) 2 carbons --> tertiary carbon,

now, clearly:

III is the lowest, since it has the LEAST Count of Carbon bonds + they are all single bonds

then, the 2nd priority is I since its cound is only 2 carbons as well, but has higher priority than III since it is a double bond...

Then, we need to analyse the Carbons bonded to 3 carbons...

Triple bond > single bonds so

By definition

Triple bonded cabonr (i.e. accounts C(triple)C for three carbons, evne though it is only one bond to one carbon)

So

II has the highest priority

choose C
