Question

Assume that a cold front is passing a city with winds of 10 m/s and a temperature gradient of 20 degrees Celsius per 100 km.

a. Assuming no local heating or cooling, how fast is temperature changing for a fixed observer, in degrees per hour.

b. Assume that it is noon and that heating from the sun would cause temperature to rise at 2 degrees/hour, in the absence of wind. Considering both the local heating and the passage of the cold front, how much is air temperature changing now for the observer?

Explanation / Answer

a) temperature changing= velocity of coldfront * temperature change

= 10m/s * 20 °c /100 km = [10/(1/3600) ]m/hr * [20 /100*1000] °c /m

= 72 °c / hour

b) cold front is cooling at the rate 72°c /hour

Local heating due to sun is 2°c/hour

Resultant of both is = 70°c / hour cooling
