Question

Rank the following in order of decreasing acid strength in aqueous solution: HCl, HOCl, HOBr, HOI.
I know the correct answer is HCL, HClO, HBrO, HIO.
However I don't know why they're in that order. Please let me know why. Thank you! Rank the following in order of decreasing acid strength in aqueous solution: HCl, HOCl, HOBr, HOI.

Explanation / Answer

HCl will have highest acidic in this group. Becuase more electronegative group atom (Cl) is attached directly to the hydrogen atom directly, so, it will highest acidic nature in the group.

Electronegativity of atom X attached to O decreases down a group, polarity of OH bond decreases in the order Cl > Br > I, acid strength decreases.

HOCl is strongest, HOI is weakest in HOX group; the order is HOCl >HOBr >HOI

Hence, the order of Acid strength is HCl > HOCl >HOBr >HOI
