Question
Please answer 12,13,14,15,16,17. Thank you! When obtaining a spectrum using carbon 13 NMR'' why is using duterated solvents a huge waste of money Some Deuterated solvent (especially D_2 O, d_6 -DMSO, CD_3 OD etc.) are best stored in a good desiccators Why? Give a brief summary of the operation of a GC-FID or TCD detector. Include an experimental condition when one detector would be preferred to the other. An aqueous sample is loaded on an HPLC for analysis. It is known to contain Cu^2+ ions. Will a UV-detector sensitive to 200 - 350 nm detect that ion? Why? Go find, read and summarize one experiment that makes me believe that HPLC or GC is actually valuable. If you use a paper, please include a reference, if you are using anything else, figure out a legal way to let me see it. If you could only have access to one instrument for the rest of your life, which would it be (if you answer "guitar" or drum kit" you will be shown the way to Music Row and forever forbidden entrance to JAAC)?Explanation / Answer
12. Using deuterated solvent is a huge waste of money for 13C NMR as the solvents used cannot be recovered asit is and cannot be recycled.
13. The deuterated solvents mentioned all are completely miscible in water and thus absorbs water from air while standing, thus adviced to keep them in dessciator.
14. GC-FID works when the sample is completely converted into vapor. Inert gas is used as mobile phase. The components ets separated and is detected by FID detector by ionization. On the othe hand gases as N2, H2, etc can be detected using thermal properties and thus TCD detector is used here.
15. For Cu2+ we need 380 nm, thu the given wavelength will not be able to identify Cu2+ clearly.
16. GC is used for low molecular weight cmpounds that have low boiling points. As the boiling point rises the volatility of compounds becomes difficult under GC inlet condiitons and thus HPLC is used here.
17. Piano is the instrument of choice.
