Question
is the end point of a titration the same as the equivalence point? My endpoint for a titration was at 15.4mL colume of the base with a 6.05 pH, would this be the equivalence point or would it be the point after this ? is the end point of a titration the same as the equivalence point? My endpoint for a titration was at 15.4mL colume of the base with a 6.05 pH, would this be the equivalence point or would it be the point after this ? is the end point of a titration the same as the equivalence point? My endpoint for a titration was at 15.4mL colume of the base with a 6.05 pH, would this be the equivalence point or would it be the point after this ?Explanation / Answer
(a) The basic diference between end point and equivalence point is at the equivalence point no of moles of titrant is equal to the number of moles of analyte (or subtance to be titrated), but end point is determined by the presence of extra moles of titrant after the equivalence point.
for example lets take acid-base neutralization reaction
HCl +NaOH ------> NaCl + H2O
so according to above equation one mole of NaOH is required to completely neutralize one mole of HCl, thus our equivalence point would be wen the one of NaOH has completely reacted with one mole of HCl to form NaCl salt. But the end point is presence of excess of titrant, i.e. presence of more than one mole of NaOH in the sample turn the solution pink to the presence of phenolphthalein indicator present in sample during titration.
(b) the end point acheived during the experiment on titation would be after equivalence point i.e. first equivalence point is acheived and after addition of even one extra drop of titrant after equivalence point results in end point in titration ( in the above case 15.4 mL)
