Acrylamide and Bisacrylamide are important for effective polymerization. They are prepared in the above described three ratios for the separation of charged molecules (proteins, nucleic acids).Acrylamide forms linear polymers whereas Bisacrylamide cross links the above formed linear polymer. As the no of cross links increases, it reduces the pore size of the gel. Thus allowing the smaller molecular weight molecules to travel faster as they can pass through the small pores easily when compared to the larger molecular weight molecules. Thus ratio of Acrylamide and Bisacrylamide determines pore size and separates proteins and nucleic acids.
