Question
QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS PART A EXTENSION LCHEM ACH-okel Counterfeit Art Wolfgang Beltracchi is an in art counterfeiter, having successfully forged at least 14 famous paintings sold for millions of dollars, before his selection of paint exposed him as a fraud. In his forgery of a painting supposedly made in 1914, Beltracchi used a white paint not available until years later. Beltracchi should have used basic lead(I) carbonate or zinc(I) oxide, which were popular historical pigments for white paint. Instead, he used the modem white pigment of titanium(IV) oxide. The ability to test for the titanium ion in white paint has exposed other forgeries by Beltracchi as well as other artists. Interestingly, the scandal has now made Beltracchi's own original work extremely valuable, sometimes surpassing the value of the forgeries. 6. Lead(II) carbonate is not currently a popular pigment due to the possible toxic effects of the lead ion. In fact, many states have legally restricted its use or have required that it be clearly labeled whenever it is used (Right-to-Know or RTK). Look up the Regulatory Information in the SDS for lead(II) carbonate. Name two states that have restricted or regulated the use of lead(II) carbonate. 7. Lead and zinc ions can be distinguished by their solubility behavior with certain anions. After consulting the solubility rules, propose one anion that could be used to distinguish these two cations that contribute to historic white pigments. 31Explanation / Answer
6. California and Pennsylvania
7. The anion is chloride. PbCl2 is soluble in hot water but insoluble in cold water. ZnCl2 disssolves in both col and hot water
8. amount of pigment = 80gm * 25% = 20gm
45% of this is lead carbonate : 20 * 45% = 9 gm
Mass of lead carbonate = 9 gm

9. You can use a spectrophotometer. You should know the wavelength where it absorbs and also its molar extinction coefficient.
