19 & 20. Using Figure 10.4 on page 306 of the text book, answer the following questions: (a) Is a solution of 60 g of LiCl in 100 grams of water at 60oC saturated, unsaturated or supersaturated?(a) __________________________ (b) Is a solution of 60 g of KCl in 100 grams of water at 60oC saturated, unsaturated or supersaturated?(b) __________________________ (c) How many grams of CsCl must be dissolved in 100 grams of water at 10oC to saturate the solution? (c) __________________________ (d) If a saturated solution of KCl at 80oC is cooled to 40oC, how many grams of KCl will precipitate?(d)__________________________ 200 CsCl 180 NaNO 160 140 RbCl e 120 LiCl 100 80 NH4Cl E 60 KCl NaCl Li2SO4 0 20 40 60 80 100 Temperature (C) Figure 10.4 Solubility of ionic compounds vs. temperature. tion of proces Conve ture de sorbed For exa Consis increas Ga always liquid This me it is fav tempera

Explanation / Answer

1. The solubility of LiCl at 60 deg C is 100g LiCl/ 100g of water. But, the solution contains only 60g of LiCl. Hence, it is an unsaturated solution as the mass of LiCl is less than the saturated mass of LiCl in water.

2. Saturated mass of KCl in 100g of water is 42g at 60 deg C. But, the mass of KCl is 60g in 100g. Hence, it is a supersaturated solution.

3. From the graph, the solubility of CsCl in 100g of water at 10 deg C is 170g. Hence, 170g of CsCl should be added to make a saturated solution at 10 deg C.

4. Saturated solution of KCl at 80 deg C would contain a Maximum of 50g per 100g if water. But, at 40 deg C the saturated solution would contain 40g of KCl per 100g of water. Hence, the extra amount of KCl should get precipitated.

Mass of KCl precipitated is 50g - 40g = 10g.
