Question

Fill out the following table with the compiled data... Use the data to answer the following questions. Rank the acids according to strength (from strongest to weakest) according to their pH. Rank the acids according to ability to neutralize NaOH (from strongest to weakest) Comment on why neutralizing capacity and acid strength are not the same. It maybe helpful to examine the structures of these three adds. Structures can be found in most Gen. Chem. textbooks or on Wikipedia. Write balanced reactions for each of the three acids with sodium hydroxide.

Explanation / Answer

the structure of all the three components is shown bloew to understand which acid is stronger. Since Oxygen is more electronegative than sulfur, the two postive charges on sulfur are pulled toward oxygen giving rise to more of electronegativity to oxygen.nitric acid has only a single positive charge whle acetiacid

Hence hydrogen atom has more positive character than the hydrogen atom in nitric acid because nitric acid has only a single positive charge on the nitrogen atom. the carbon atom in acetic acid only has a partial positive charge. hence H2SO4 is stronger than HNO3 which in turn will be stronger tan acecic acid

accodringlyH2SO4> HNO3>acetic acid ( neutralizing ability with NaOH)

3. H2SO4 + 2NaOH ------->Na2SO4 + H2O

HNO3+ NaOH------>NaNO3+ H2O

CH3COOH+ NaOH-------->CH3COONa + H2O
