Question

If based on the procedure described in the lab procedure, the data is Mass (before reaction): test tube + HCl(aq) + stir bar + capsule 26.042 g Mass (after reaction): test tube + HCl(aq) + stir bar + capsule 25.783 g Volume of water displaced from the wash bottle 144 mL Temperature of the CO_2(g) 293.6 K CO2(g) pressure 0.986 atm Calculate each of the items below to three significant figures. Enter only the numerical value in the answer box. a) Calculate the mass of CO_2(g) _____ b) Calculate the moles of CO_2(g) _____ c) Calculate the density of CO_2(g) in g/L _____ d) Calculate the molar mass of CO_2 assuming a temperature of 293.6 K. _____

Explanation / Answer

Volume of water displaced from the wash bottle = 144ml =0.144Litre

Pressure of CO2 = 0.986atm

Temperature = 293.6K

Ideal gas equation , PV= nRT

Therefore, n = PV/RT

Where, n= No of mole, P= pressure,

R= gas constant,0.082057(liit atm/mole K)

T= Temperature in K

Substituting the values

n=(0.986atm×0.144litre)/0.082057(litre atm/K mole)× 293.6K

= 0.00589mole

Mass of CO2 = 26.042g - 25.783g = 0.259g

Density of CO2 = 0.259g/0.144litre = 1.8g/litre

Molar mass of CO2 = mass of CO2/mole of CO2

= 0.259g/0.00589

= 44 g/mole
