Question

Determine the missing specie, in the following balanced chemical reaction Mg + 2HCl rightarrow H_2 + _____________ Determine the missing species in the following balanced chemical reaction 2 AlCl_2 + __________ rightarrow 6 NaCl + Al_2(SO_4)_3 Consider the following decomposition reaction 2 H_2O_2 rightarrow 2 H_2O + O_2 If 57grams of water and 64 grams of Oxygen are produced, what mass of H_2O_2 decomposed? Consider the following chemical reaction 2 NaCl + Ca(OH)_2 rightarrow CaCl_2 + 2 NaOH If 281 grams of NaCl is reacted with 48 grams of Calcium Hydroxide and 160 grams of Sodium Hydroxide is produced, what mass of Calcium Chloride is produced?

Explanation / Answer

1.The missing species are : MgCl2

Mg+2HCl--------------> MgCl2 + H2

2.The missing species are : Na2SO4

             2 AlCl3 + 3 Na2SO4 ----------------> 6 NaCl + Al2 (SO4)3

3. This is based on law of conservation of mass.

Total mass of reactants = total mass of products.

Total mass of products = 57g + 64g

                                     = 121g

Hence 121g of hydrogen peroxide is decomposed.

4. This is based on law of conservation of mass.

Total mass of reactants = total mass of products.-------------------------(1)

Total mass of reactants =( 281+148)g

                                     = 429g

Total mass of products = 160g+ mass of CaCl2

by substituting in (1), we get

429g = 160g+ mass of CaCl2

therefore mass of CaCl2 = 429g -160g

                                         = 269g
