Question
A different type of iodine clock reaction was conducted. Its trails were performed at 23 degree c and the following data was collected. a. Why do you think the reaction s called a clock reaction? b. since solutions is diluted to a total volume. Calculated the initial concentration of (only) S_2 O_3^2- after mixing all solutions together. c. What is the final concentration of [_2 O_3^2] at the end of each experimental trail? d calculate the rate (-delta [S_2 O_3^2]/delta phi) for each experiment run and list your answer in the table.Explanation / Answer
(a) I2 is generated during the course of the reaction. It will then react with S2O3^2- . Initially the color of the solution will be blue , but at the end point when all the I2 is consumed, the color of the solution will change from blue to colorless.
(b) total volume = 50mL
initial concentration of S2O3^2- after dilution = 0.005 M * 10mL/50mL = 0.001 M
(c) Ttwo reaction that is occuring is :
2KI + Na2S2O8 = I2 + Na2SO4 + K2SO4
I2 + 2Na2S2O3 = 2NaI + Na2S4O6
I2 will initally react with S2O3^2-. When all of it is consumed, I2 will react with startch to generate a blue color solution.
Final concentration in all the experiments = 0
Amount of Na2S2O3 initially added = 0.005 * 0.01L = 0.00005 moles
Rate in exp 1 = -[0- 0.00005 moles]/(29-0) = 1.72*10^-6 moles/s
Rate in exp 2 and 3 = -[0- 0.00005 moles]/(14.5-0) = 3.45*10^-6 moles/s
