Question

Need help with my pre lab!

The report for this experiment must be submitted before the end of the lab period. The values you calculate for this Prelab Exercise are required for your experiment. 1. Find the concentration of Cu^2+ in each of the following solutions. Report the values to 4 dp (even if this is not the correct number of SF; do not use scientific notation). Do not show your work. These values will be used during the lab period. The voltages for a series of Cu/Cu concentration cells were measured using a MicroLab unit. The equation of the line for a graph of voltage (E_cell) versus log[Cu^2+] was y = -0.0170x - 0.0039. The voltage of a solution with an unknown [Cu^2+] was measured against the same reference cell, under the same conditions; the voltage was found to be 0.027 V. Determine the of the unknown solution.

Explanation / Answer

CuSO4 <==> Cu^2+ + SO4^2-

1 mol Cu^2+ is produced from 1 mol CuSO4.

Concentration in solution 1 :

Total volume = 10mL

Concentration of Cu^2+ = 0.5 mL * 0.05 M/10mL = 2.5*10^-3 M

------------------------------------------------------

Concentration in solution 2 :

Total volume = 10mL

Concentration of Cu^2+ = 1 mL * 0.05 M/10mL = 0.005 M

------------------------------------------------

Concentration in solution 3 :

Total volume = 10mL

Concentration of Cu^2+ = 3 mL * 0.05 M/10mL = 0.015 M

---------------------------------------------

Concentration in solution 4 :

Total volume = 10mL

Concentration of Cu^2+ = 5 mL * 0.05 M/10mL = 0.025 M
