Question
The accompanying graphs shows titration curves for two monoprotic acids. a. Which curve is that of a strong acid? Graph b. Which curve is that of a weak acid? Graph c. What is the approximate pH at the equivalence point for each? Graph A: Graph B d. Since the volumes of titrating base are shown as different in these two graphs, what could you say about the relative molarities of the original acid solutions? (Assuming the titrating base stayed the same.) e. If the pH values were not shown on these two graphs, what else about the graphs could you use to decide on whether it was a weak acid or strong acid titration?Explanation / Answer
Answers:
a) Graph A is the Strong Acid:
Reason: if you look at the pH at 0 base volume, A acid has 2 where are B has 4 pH value. So A is strong acid.
b) Graph B is the weak acid. (Hope, you know that 4 pH means weak acid. and 2 pH strong acid)
c) Aprox equivalent point is : 7 pH for both A and B
d) Graph B consumes more volume than A. So, B has high molarity than A.
e) From the graph shape we can assume whether it is weak acid or strong acid. IF the initial and final lines are wider, then it could be a strong acid as in the case of A.
where as, If the intial line and fine lines are very norrow, it could be a weak acid.
