Question
Potassium hydrogen phthalate, KHP (actual formula KHC_8H_4O_4 with MM = 204 g/mol) is somewhat soluble in water at 25 degree C. Its solubility can be represented by this equilibrium reaction: KHP_(s) leftarrow rightarrow K^+_(aq) + HP^-_(aq) An experiment similar to Eq487 was conducted. A 0.30 M aqueous solution of KCI was saturated with KHP. Solid KHP was filtered from the mixture to leave a saturated solution. Samples of the saturated solution were titrated with 0.575 M NaOH solution to yield the following data. Use the data to complete this table: (Please show work. Use separate sheet if necessary.)Explanation / Answer
Trial 1:
a: Moles = molarity x volume = 0.575 x 0.01581mL = 9.1e-3moles
b: As 1:1 STOICHIOMETRY, moles of HP- = 9.1e-3 moles
c: conc of HP- = moles/volume = 9.1/0.025 = 0.36363M
d: K+ initial = 0.3M ( KCl initial solution)
e: K+ from dissolved KHP = 0.36363M
f: K+ sat = 0.3M + 0.36363M = 0.66363M
g: Ksp = K+sat x HP-sat = 0.66363 x 0.36363 = 0.24
