Question

Help please question 2 and 3? Average initial temperature of H_2O (0-3 minutes) Highest temperature attained by H_2O(5-8 minutes) Change in H_2O temperature, Delta T_water Heat absorbed by H_2O, Heat transferred by metal. Change in metal temperature, Delta T_metal Heat Capacity of metal. C_metal Which metal has the highest heat capacity? Was this what you would have predicted? Explain your answer. Having determined the heat capacity of both metals predict whether or not the heat capacity of stone would be greater than, less to or equal to iron. Explain your answer.

Explanation / Answer

metal having more specific heat will bring in less temperature change. This is not the case in the given data. Aluminium metal brought more temperature change while iron brought in less temperature change for the same heat duty. the literature value of heat capacity of aluminum is 0.9 where as present data suggests it to be 0.348.

heat capaciy is definied as the amount of heat required for rising the temperature of unit mass of substance by 1 deg.c. Hence heat capacity of stone is more than iron since stone temperature change during heating will be less than iron when same heat has to be transferred.
