Question
Glutamine (HQ) has the following K_a values: HQ^+ doubleheadarrow HQ + H^+ pK_a1 = 2.19 HQ doubleheadarrow Q^- + H^+ pK_a2 = 9.00 (a) Calculate the concentrations of all existing species in the solution where 18.56 mg glutamine hydrochloride (H_2Q^+ Cl^-) is dissolved to make a 150.00-mL solution. (b) Calculate the concentrations of all existing species in the solution where 18.56 mg glutamine (HQ) is dissolved to make a 150.00-mL solution. (c) Calculate the concentrations of all existing species in the solution where 18.56 mg potassium glutamate (K^+ Q^-) is dissolved to make a 150.00-mL solution.Explanation / Answer
a)H2Q+=HQ+H+ Ka1=10^-2.19 initial concentration of H2Q=18.56*1000/(182.5*150) mol/L=0.678 mol/L if conc of HQ and H+ be x then x^2/0.678-x=10^-2.19 Solving this quadratic equation using Sridhar Acharya's formula we get x=4.5*10^-2
b)HQ=H++Q- Ka2=10^-9 Initial concentration of HQ=18.56*1000/(146*150 ) mol/L=0.847 mol
