Question

State the level of conservation of matter. In light of this law, what would you predict the results of the two weighing in reaction 8 to be? Classify each of the following as a physical property (PP) or a chemical property (CP). _____ a. Silver conducts an electric current. ______ b. Hydrogen burns but does not support combustion. ______ c. Mercury had a density of 13.6 g/ml. ____ d. Sugar dissolves in a hot cup of tea. (Think about this one. Is the sweet taste of sugar still there?) ___e. Diesel fuel burns in a truck engine. What chemical test could be used to confirm that the gas produced in a chemical reaction is carbon dioxide? Be specific, please. Balance the following equations: a. NaOH + (NH_4)_3 PO_4 rightarrow Na_3PO_4 + H_2O + NH_3 b. C_2H_6O + O_2 rightarrow CO_2 + H_2O

Explanation / Answer

1) Law of conservation of matter : "Matter can neither created nor destroyed in an isolated system, but changes from one form to another form". In other words if it disappears from one form it appears somewhere in another form. In a reaction it disappears from initial form and forms in another product form but the resultant matter is same.

2) Physical Property : Property that do not change the chemical nature of the matter

chemical Property : Property that do change the chemical nature of the matter.

a) Silver conducts an electric current : Physical property

b) Hydrogen burns but doesnt support combustion : chemical property because hydrogen burns is changing its nature.

c) Mercury density is Physical property

d) Sugar dissolves in a hot cup of tea : Physical property it do not change its chemical nature, form might change.

e) Diesel fuel burns in a engine : Chemical Property. Diesel burns and produces energy so its chemical nature changing

3) There are many tests to identify CO2 gas but standard and easy test is Lime water test.

        When carbon dioxide is run through lime water, the water turns cloudy. This is because the water is a solution of calcium hydroxide, and when it reacts with carbon dioxide, a solid precipitate of calcium carbonate forms.

4) a) (NH4)3PO4+ 3 NaOH -----> Na3PO4+ 3 NH3+ 3 H2O

     b)10 C2H6O + 15 O2 -----> 20 CO2 + 3 H20
